I’ve been pondering a new-to-me word quite a bit lately. The word is “meme” (rhymes with team). Maybe you already know of this way of describing cultural ideas or phenomenon, but it’s a new idea to me. From the always helpful Wikipedia:

A meme (/ˈmiːm/) is an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. While genes transmit biological information, memes are said to transmit ideas and belief information.

I’ve been on a bit of a meme-watch, looking for examples of memes in my life. There are plenty! One of my favorite memes is the thumbs up. My husband is an avid user of this gesture. In fact, it is tough to find a picture of him where he is not administering one. When he gives the thumbs up, everyone understands that all is right in his world – because it’s a meme.

After practicing Savasana the other day, I had the idea. Can I start a new meme? How wonderful would the world be if the idea of practicing Savasana, every day for 20 minutes became a meme? People would say, “Of course I lie down and do nothing for 20 minutes every day, doesn’t everyone?”

So, I need your help . . . practice Savasana for 20 minutes every day. Literally lie down, and do nothing for 20 minutes every day. Remain awake to observe this relaxation. Then, tell your friends about it and how wonderful it is! Let’s start a relaxation meme!

Are you in? Do you already practice Savasana every day? How has it impacted your life to intentionally do nothing?

As I’ve tried to kick my habit of an afternoon cup of coffee, this has been a wonderful substitute. When I’m done with my afternoon Savasana, my mind is clear and I feel like a million bucks!
