I am committed to intentional parenting. For me, this means examining the ways I nurture, teach, feed and correct my children. This commitment often demands I wear the hat of a research scientist. When AE was around a year old, I began combing through the research on common disciplinary approaches. All the studies that confirmed the ineffectiveness of  rewards and punishments made perfect sense to me. I absolutely loved Dan Pink’s TED Talk on motivation. So, my husband I and resolved to parent our children without the use of rewards and punishments.

However, I quickly realized there is a very slippery slope between positive discipline and permissiveness. We knew we didn’t want to spank, yell, use timeouts, sticker charts or prizes. But, we didn’t know what to do when our daughter hit the dog, refused to wash her hands before dinner or didn’t want to wait her turn for the slide at the playground.

We quickly realized we needed to fill our “positive parenting toolkit.” It isn’t enough to move away from something, you have to intentionally move toward something else.

If you often feel overwhelmed and under equipped, it may be time to fill up your toolkit. If you know what you don’t want to do (yell or spank, for example), but you don’t know what to do instead; let go of shame and embrace the fact that you just need more information. I’m always happy to support you and your positive parenting intentions. You can email me (jennifer@everybreathitake.com) anytime for support and encouragement!

When I heard about this resource, I knew I had to tell you about it. It is a very inexpensive way to fill up your toolkit! I haven’t read all of these e-products, but Kelly Bartlett’s Encouraging Words for Kids, Jamie Martin’s Mindset for Moms and Jillian Riley’s Raising a Creative Kid are each work the $24.95 bundle price on their own! I can’t wait to dig into the other products included. (I’m going to start with Mommy Overwhelm by Laura Schuerwegen, cause you know – overwhelm has been my middle name lately. Want to read it with me? We can chat about it together!)
