My Adult Temper Tantrums

Do you ever look at the 10-day weather forecast? Maybe you have an event coming up, and you want to get an idea what the weather will be a week and a half from now.

Well, I look at it almost every day. I like to have an idea what’s coming up. Will it be raining in 10 days? Will I need a sweater when I take AE to the playground the weekend after next?

I don’t have scientific data to prove or disprove this, but I have a hypothesis about the accuracy of a forecast for 10 days into the future. It isn’t accurate. It’s a guess.

But, I still look. I am a chronic planner. You might call me a life forecaster. I like to plan what we’ll be doing, feeling and experiencing in a week, a month, a year – even a decade.

It’s a problem. It’s a problem because control is a dangerous illusion. It’s a problem because when life doesn’t go according to plan, I am prone to adult temper tantrums.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be talking about how God is patiently handling these fits of mine here in a series called Faith in the Unplanned Seasons.

In the meantime, are there any other planners out there? How do you handle it when you discover the forecast wasn’t accurate?

  3. Adult temper tantrums? Um, yes, guilty of that. I had a major, MAJOR realization 6 or 7 years ago when I was in my mid-twenties: I am not the ultimate boss of my own life, and I am definitely not the boss of everybody else’s. It was a shock to my system, to put it mildly!

I’m looking forward to what you have to say!

  4. I love that and agree completely, Anne. I’m prone to forgetting, though. So, I regularly look in the mirror and say “You, my dear, are not the general manager of the universe!”
